TEACH FOR TEXAS CONDITIONAL GRANT PROGRAM
(This Is a Student Loan with Cancellation Provisions for Teaching)
PROGRAM PURPOSE
The purpose of the program is to encourage students to become certified teachers and to encourage these newly certified teachers to teach in a field having a critical shortage of teachers or in communities having a critical shortage of teachers.AWARDS
The maximum amount that may be awarded to a student in a given semester or term is equal to two times the average amount of the TEXAS Grant for a fulltime student (12 or more semester hours.) Based on this average the Teach for Texas Conditional Grant award for a fulltime student is $2,500 per semester or $5,000 annually. Awards may be prorated for less than full-time but at least 3/4 time.ELIGIBLE STUDENTS MUST:
- obtain recommendation from the dean of the college/school/ or department of education. meet ALL the requirements of the TEXAS Grant, including but not limited to: Texas residency, a GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, satisfactory academic progress as defined in statute and rule, financial need, and application for any available financial aid or assistance. have applied for and been accepted into the educator certification program and be enrolled at least 3/4 time at an approved institution as a junior or senior in a baccalaureate degree program or a renewal recipient in the final fifth year required by some institutions in order to be recommended for certification (this is not a post-baccalaureate program) if:
- the degree program is in a teaching field certified as having a critical shortage of teachers in Texas in the year in which the person begins the educator certification program; or the recipient agrees to teach in a Texas community certified as experiencing a critical shortage of teachers in any year in which the person receives a grant or in any subsequent year in which the person fulfills the teaching obligation. enter into an agreement with the Coordinating Board committing to teach full-time for five years at the preschool, primary, or secondary level in a public school in Texas in the person's chosen critical shortage field or in a community experiencing a critical teacher shortage.
- sign a promissory note acknowledging the conditional nature of the grant and promising to repay the grant plus interest at an annual fixed interest rate of 7 percent and other charges stated in the promissory note.
FIRST TIME APPLICANTS SEPTEMBER 1, 2001, OR LATER MUST ALSO:
- receive a TEXAS Grant. This requirement does not apply to current juniors, seniors or a renewal recipient in the final fiffh year required by some institutions in order to be recommended for certification.
INELIGIBLE STUDENTS
- Except for renewal students in a required fifth-year certification program, students who have been granted a baccalaureate degree are not eligible.
- Students who have been convicted of a felony or an offense under Chapter 481, Health and Safety Code (Texas Controlled Substances Act), or under the law of another jurisdiction involving a controlled substance as defined in Chapter 481, Health and Safety Code, are not eligible unless other applicable eligibility requirements set forth in rule have been met.
LIMITS TO CQNTINUED ELIGIBILITY
Students continue to be eligible for the Teach for Texas Conditional Grant contingent upon availability of funds:
- up to six years after receiving the first TEXAS Grant award,
- for a maximum of 90 semester credit hours, as long as they do not receive funds through the TEXAS Grant and Teach for Texas Conditional Grant for more than 150 semester credit hours.
GRANT CONDITIONS AND INFORMATION
- The teaching obligation incurred by accepting one or more awards through the Teach for Texas Conditional Grant is fixed at a single five-year period. If a recipient fails to maintain the requirements set forth below, in the promissory note and in the agreement to teach, the grant automatically becomes a loan. To avoid repayment recipients must:
- remain continuously enrolled at least 1/2 time in an eligible educator certification program, maintain satisfactory academic progress. defined as:
- completing at least 75 percent of the semester credit hours attempted in the most recent academic year, and
- earning a grade point average of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale;
- become certified as a teacher within 18 months of the date the baccalaureate degree was conferred; begin fulltime eligible teaching within 18 months of the date the baccalaureate degree was conferred; and
- complete the full five year teaching obligation within six years.
- The loan repayment schedule will call for a minimum annual repayment of $1,200 or an amount required to repay the loan within 10 years whichever is greater.

TEACH FOR TEXAS APPLICANT ELIGIBILITY CHECKLIST
For the 2000/20001 academic year, in order to be eligible for a Teach for Texas Conditional Grant students must meet all of the requirements of the TEXAS Grant, except for the high school graduating requirements (after 9/1/2001 a student must actually receive a TEXAS grant to qualify for a Teach for Texas Conditional Grant).
