Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program
What is the Byrd Scholarship?
The Byrd Scholarship is a highly competitive academic merit scholarship based on high school grade point average, rank in high school graduating class, and scores on college entrance examination. GED candidates compete by GED academic scores.
Who can qualify?
A student who is a current high school graduatng senior or person completing GED certification during the award year and is nominated as most academically eligible by his/her senior class high school counselor or GED center director. Must be a bona fide Texas resident and U.S. citizen or U.S. National or eligible U.S. permanent resident.
Who is not eligible?
Students who will attend a US Military Academy or a for-profit institution are not eligible for this program.
How may it be used?
The student must have been accepted for enrollment in an eligible institution of higher education on a full-time basis. They must enroll by the fall term after graduating from high school. They must meet and follow rules and procedures required for continuation in the program.
Source/Allocation of Funds
Source of funds is the federal government, which also determines the size of each year's award.
Students, selected as scholarship recipients their senior year in high school or immediately after completing the GED, bring these awards with them when they enter an institution.
There is no allocation among institutions. |
Calendar - Important Dates
Census Date -- earliest date each term for the FAO to complete that term's Byrd Scholarship roster and return it to the Board, requesting the issuance of checks to Byrd Scholars at the institution.
Oct. 30 -- preferred last date for requesting reimbursements for the fall term.
March 31 -- preferred last date for requesting reimbursements for the spring term. |
Potential Sanctions
Students not enrolled for a full semester course (12 hours) load during the first year after completion of their senior year will lose eligibility to continue in the program.
Students who are enrolled for less than full time (12 hours) during their second through fourth year may lose eligibility to continue in the program.
Students must meet academic requirements for continuation in the program. |
