Scholarships are considered gift aid that does not have to be paid back. They are usually based on a student's academic performance, special talent and/or financial need. Texas Southern University participates in several different scholarship programs.
Texas Southern University has a commitment to academic excellence. Thus, the objective of our scholarship program is to attract students who have demonstrated extraordinary scholarly efforts in high school. Final awards will be based on proof of graduation and test scores, per official transcript of the student's complete academic record.
Honors Program
The Frederick Douglass Honors Program is designed to offer distinguished students an opportunity to enroll in specialized curriculums in the areas of liberal arts, the sciences and many other fields of study. University Scholarship
Our General University Scholarship Program is for high academic achievers competing for national honors, such as the National Merit Scholarship, National Achievement Scholarship Program for Outstanding Negro Students and the National Achievement Program for commended students. The scholarship may be renewed annually for no more than four consecutive years in a four-year curriculum and for no more than five consecutive years in a five-year curriculum at the undergraduate level.

Departmental Scholarships
In addition to the University scholarship programs, all departments offer merit-based scholarships. These scholarships are awarded in accordance to standards established by the respective departments. Consult your major department for additional information.
State Scholarships
There are several scholarships funded through the State of Texas. The Financial Aid Office will determine eligible students who meet the individual requirements for each state scholarship program. After eligible students are identified a dollar amount is determined based on a student's unmet financial need. This amount will become part of the student's financial aid award.

Outside Scholarships
Outside scholarships are received from sources like Coca Cola, GM, Ford, and UNCF. These scholarships are available to students based on posted information the Financial Aid Office receives from independent organizations. All the deadlines and criteria are set forth by each individual business or organization that is offering the scholarship. These scholarships will be posted in the Financial Aid Office and in corresponding departments. Applications can be obtained through the Financial Aid Office.
