Hazlewood Act Exemption Procedures
Hazlewood Act (Texas Veterans) - Provides tuition and fee exemption (except property deposits and student service fees) for any student who:
- Was a resident of the state of Texas at the time of entry into active duty;
- Received an honorable or general under honorable discharge from the military;
- Has exhausted, or is not entitled to any VA or federal education benefits ( GI Bill, Pell/ SEOG grant)*;
- Is classified as a Texas resident for tuition purposes;
- Served at lease 180 days of active duty after all training;
- Exemption provided thus far has not exceeded a cumulative total of 150 credits hours that began the fall 1995 semester*.
- Has not defaulted on any student loans made or guaranteed by the state of Texas*.

To apply for Hazlewood benefits, applicants must provide the following documents:
- TSU Hazlewood application
- proof of non-eligibility for VA benefits (see contact information below)
- copy of applicants DD 214 member 2-4 (see contact information below)
- copy of applicants most recent income tax return and/or Student Aid Report (SAR)
- letter from any other institution(s) where previous Hazlewood Act benefits were used benefits application
Applications for Hazlewood benefits must be renewed each year and eligibility will be determined only after all documents have been received by the Office of Student Financial Assistance. All Hazlewood recipients must notify the Hazlewood coordinator each semester after registering for classes.
